PESA (Percutaneous Epididymal Sperm Aspiration)

What is PESA?

Percutaneous Epididymal Sperm Aspiration (PESA) is a minimally invasive sperm retrieval technique used for men with obstructive azoospermia, a condition where sperm is produced but blocked from reaching the semen. This method is commonly used in IVF (In Vitro Fertilization) with ICSI (Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection).

When PESA is Recommended?

TESA is typically recommended in the following cases:

  • Previous Vasectomy (for those seeking fatherhood without reversal surgery).
  • Congenital Absence of the Vas Deferens (CAVD) (common in cystic fibrosis patients).
  • Blockages in the Epididymis or Vas Deferens due to infections, trauma, or surgeries.

Steps Involved in PESA Treatment

  1. Local Anesthesia: The procedure is performed under local anesthesia to numb the area.
  2. Needle Aspiration: A fine needle is inserted into the epididymis, and sperm is aspirated.
  3. Sperm Processing: The collected sperm is examined and prepared for ICSI or freezing for later use.
