IMSI Treatment

IMSI: Purpose, Procedure & Results

What is Intra-Cytoplasmic Morphologically-Selected Sperm Injection (IMSI)?

IMSI is an advanced IVF technique that helps overcome male infertility, especially in cases involving poor sperm morphology (Teratozoospermia). By selecting the best-quality sperm under high magnification, IMSI improves the chances of creating healthy embryos and achieving successful pregnancy outcomes.

When to Consider IMSI?

IMSI is recommended in the following situations:

  • Teratozoospermia: Abnormally shaped sperm hinder embryo development.
  • High DNA fragmentation in sperm: Damaged DNA reduces fertilization and embryo quality.
  • Repeated ICSI failures: When standard ICSI has not resulted in pregnancy.
  • Sperm aspiration cases (e.g., Azoospermia): IMSI can enhance embryo quality.
  • Recurrent first-trimester miscarriages: IMSI may help improve pregnancy success and reach full term.

How is IMSI Performed?

The process begins with ovarian stimulation in the female partner to develop healthy follicles. Once mature, oocytes are retrieved and prepared for fertilization.
Sperm is then examined under a microscope with 6600x magnification to detect any structural abnormalities. A single, healthy sperm is carefully selected and injected into the egg (similar to ICSI). The resulting embryo is cultured and transferred to the uterus.

Benefits of IMSI:

By using high-magnification sperm selection, IMSI enhances embryo quality, increases the chances of successful implantation, and improves the likelihood of a full-term pregnancy.
