MESA (Micro Epididymal Sperm Aspiration)

What is MESA?

Micro Epididymal Sperm Aspiration (MESA) is a surgical sperm retrieval technique used for men with obstructive azoospermia – a condition where sperm production is normal, but a blockage prevents sperm from being present in the ejaculate. It is a highly effective procedure for obtaining high-quality sperm for IVF (In Vitro Fertilization) and ICSI (Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection).

When MESA is Recommended?

MESA is typically recommended in the following cases:

  • Failed Vasectomy Reversal (MESA can provide an alternative route to retrieve sperm).
  • Reproductive Tract Blockages caused by trauma, inflammation, or prior surgeries.
  • Congenital or acquired vas deferens obstruction (e.g., due to vasectomy, infections, or genetic conditions like Cystic Fibrosis).

Steps Involved in MESA Treatment

  1. Anesthesia: The procedure is done under general or local anesthesia.
  2. Microsurgical Approach: A small incision is made in the scrotum, and a high-powered surgical microscope is used to locate the epididymis.
  3. Sperm Aspiration: Sperm are carefully extracted from the epididymal tubules using a fine needle.
  4. Laboratory Processing: The retrieved sperm are examined, processed, and stored for future fertility treatments.
