MESA (Micro Epididymal Sperm Aspiration)

What is MESA?

Micro Epididymal Sperm Aspiration (MESA) is a surgical sperm retrieval technique used for men with obstructive azoospermia – a condition where sperm production is normal, but a blockage prevents sperm from being present in the ejaculate. It is a highly effective procedure for obtaining high-quality sperm for IVF (In Vitro Fertilization) and ICSI (Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection).

When MESA is Recommended?

MESA is typically recommended in the following cases:

Failed Vasectomy Reversal (MESA can provide an alternative route to retrieve sperm).
Reproductive Tract Blockages caused by trauma, inflammation, or prior surgeries.
Congenital or acquired vas deferens obstruction (e.g., due to vasectomy, infections, or genetic conditions like Cystic Fibrosis).

Steps Involved in MESA Treatment

Anesthesia: The procedure is done under general or local anesthesia.
Microsurgical Approach: A small incision is made in the scrotum, and a high-powered surgical microscope is used to locate the epididymis.
Sperm Aspiration: Sperm are carefully extracted from the epididymal tubules using a fine needle.
Laboratory Processing: The retrieved sperm are examined, processed, and stored for future fertility treatments.
