Laser Assisted Hatching - LAH

LAH: Purpose, Procedure & Results

What is Laser Assisted Hatching (LAH)?

Laser Assisted Hatching (LAH) is a technique used in IVF to improve embryo implantation rates. By using a precision laser, a small opening is made in the outer shell (zona pellucida) of the embryo to help it hatch and attach more easily to the uterine lining.

When to Consider LAH?

IMSI is recommended in the following situations: When the embryo’s outer layer (zona) is thicker than 16 microns

  • For women over the age of 35
  • After multiple failed IVF or implantation attempts
  • In cases of repeated ICSI failures
  • When performing genetic testing such as PGS, PGD, or PGT-A
  • During frozen embryo transfer (FET) cycles

What is the Procedure for Successful LAH:

In some cases, embryos fail to implant because they cannot hatch naturally from the zona pellucida. LAH helps overcome this by creating a precise opening using a laser, improving the chances of implantation.
Previously, fixed lasers were used, but now advanced movable (navi) lasers are commonly employed for more accuracy and safety.
LAH is also useful for procedures like blastomere or ectoderm biopsy during genetic testing.
