Female Infertility - Low AMH

Low AMH Treatment and Symptoms
Anti-Mullerian Hormone (AMH) is a key indicator of ovarian reserve, which plays an essential role in a woman’s ability to conceive. AMH is produced by the follicles in the ovaries and can be measured through a simple blood test at any point in the menstrual cycle, as its levels remain consistent throughout. AMH levels between 2.5 and 4.5 are generally considered within a healthy range.
Symptoms of Low AMH:
A decline in AMH levels suggests a reduction in ovarian reserve, a change that typically begins after the age of 35 and accelerates after 38. However, around 10% of women may experience this decline much earlier.
Low AMH often does not produce noticeable symptoms and is commonly detected during fertility assessments. Some signs that may be observed include:
- Irregular menstrual cycles (either longer or shorter)
- Spotting before periods
- Hot flashes
- Mood swings
Causes of Low AMH:
While age is a major factor in declining AMH levels, several other causes include:
- Smoking
- Endometriosis
- Chemotherapy
- Radiation therapy
- Exposure to harmful chemicals
- Previous ovarian surgeries
- In some cases, AMH levels may drop without any identifiable cause.
Treatment Options:
When AMH levels begin to drop, couples trying to conceive are encouraged to pursue pregnancy sooner rather than later. IVF or ICSI using the woman’s own eggs can be considered, supported by tailored stimulation protocols. Certain supplements like DHEA, testosterone gel, and Vitamin D3 may help improve ovarian response to a limited extent.
Advanced options like intra-ovarian PRP (platelet-rich plasma) and stem cell therapy are also available, though their effectiveness is still being studied. If the ovaries do not respond to treatment, using donor eggs may be an effective option for conception.
Prevention and Lifestyle Tips:
While declining AMH levels are a natural part of aging, early onset may be preventable. Adopting a healthy lifestyle-including a balanced diet, avoiding smoking and substance use, and engaging in regular physical activity-can help delay the decline and reduce associated symptoms.
