Tubal Blockage

Tubal Blockage Symptoms and Treatment
Blocked fallopian tubes are a common cause of female infertility. These tubes connect the ovaries to the uterus and play a crucial role in picking up the egg during ovulation, as well as facilitating the movement of the egg, sperm, and resulting embryo. When the fallopian tubes are blocked, this process is disrupted, making natural conception more difficult.
Symptoms of blocked fallopian tubes:
Tubal blockage accounts for approximately 25–35% of female infertility cases. It may present with a range of symptoms, including:
- Pain in the lower abdomen
- Frequent vaginal discharge
- Mild, persistent fever
Causes:
Several factors can lead to tubal blockage, including:
- Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID)
- A history of ectopic pregnancy
- Previous abdominal surgeries
- Tuberculosis
- Uterine fibroids
- Certain sexually transmitted infections (STIs)
- Endometriosis
Fallopian tube blockages can be diagnosed using sonosalpingography (SSG), hysterosalpingography (HSG), or hysterolaparoscopy. Treatment depends on several factors, such as the severity and location of the blockage, any associated conditions, the presence of hydrosalpinx (fluid buildup in the tubes), the patient’s age, and overall fertility health.
In younger patients with no additional complications, laparoscopic tubal recanalization may be an option. However, there is a risk that the tubes may become blocked again. For other patients, IVF or ICSI is generally recommended.
Maintaining good genital health, practicing menstrual hygiene, and engaging in safe sexual practices can help prevent tubal blockages. With proper medical care and a balanced diet, around 60 out of 100 women with tubal blockage achieve pregnancy through IVF.
